june 29

Can you believe its been 2 weeks allready? Yesterday in Ica, I visited the meseo regional de Ica, which had great explaintions in english about Paracas civilization. But, my favorite was bio/ anthropology room. They had really mummies and explainations of the diseases the natives died from. The evidence was great besides malaria many people died from a parasite bone disease that would literally eat the bone away. Also, the skulls of the cone head people were there. And, thats not forget, the explaination of head surgery operation to relive pressure on the brain these surgeries were 45 to 50 percent successful. I've had some touble finding fast internet access, but ever since Ica its been okay. I arrived in Arequipa today. It was a twelve hour bus ride. I´ve had really bad experiences with busses and last night was the same. I sat in the very back where the window was leaking in cold air; the sound and temperature made it difficult to sleep. I used T shirt as a hat and my backpack as a blancket to keep my legs warm. You can tell that it is very high in altitude here as breathing can be difficult. The are having a fesitval for St. Pablo and St. Pedro today this made it difficult to nogoitate the crowds to the laundry mat. I am going to chivay tommorrow for some mountaineering, hopefully.

hope all is well... thanks for emailing back,

Pete

June 23

I awoke early today. I needed to get out into the sea. I almost forgot why I love it so. Cerro Azul is got an ocean like pacificas linda mar. I felt right at home, but I didnt hardly surf that way because I hardly knew how the waves worked. I did have fun, though. This time of year Cerro Azul is a ghost town. I mean nobody is on the street no, nothing, nada. I couldnt take being in a place thats so lonely. Its freaky, I tell you. The resturant is open, but all ten or fifteen are just waiting for me to walk in. I dont mean waiting for a tourist, I mean me, nobody else but me. I left for Pisco this morning, where I will see the national park and isla ballestas tommorrow. Unfortunately, I left my spanish english dictionary on the bus. But, I bought a much cheaper one on the street which I like better. I have a blog system set up, thanks Robin! You can check out all my emails at once at peteinperu.blogspot.com ´´READ THE BLOG, DO IT, YOU MUST´´ that me tell you how hot water works. They dont have hot water heaters that would defeat I point of me telling you. They have an electrical unit on the shower itself. It heats the water with electrical resistence like an electric stove boils your water. first, you turn on the water. step two, turn on the electrical swtch and get in. When you are finished, you must do turn off the switch then the water valve. Otherwise, you get a little shock.

testing, more testing, less blogging

this is to see if i can email to pete's blog.
and then if pete can email to his blog.

> hello everyone, everything is fine. I spent 3 days studying intense
>spanish in Pucusana. The senora of the house was so friendly and I
really will miss her and her family. I saw the healing lagoon in Chilca. I also visited the ruins in Pacamac (spelling ify). But in Pucusana, I mostly passed my dictionary back and forth with the senora as we talked. I even had conversations about politics in spanish. All conversations were very slow and I appreciate the senoras patience. Now, I am in Cerro Azul.
It looks poor here. Its depressing to look at. Ill be here a few days surfing, hopefully. Then Im off to Pesco. I dont have the right email for mom. Im alive and doing fine. Hopefully, I have time to give a more detailed account of my travels in email. My sister, Robin, is suppose to help set a blog account. Robin where are you. bye for know pete

hola,

I have a story for you people. But, first, I am safe and sound in
Pucusana.
Yesterday, I saw the national muesum and the history muesum and the
night life of lima. My taxi driver picked me up in the morning to take me to the bus stop. I didnt realize it at the time but he gave me counterfiet money.
Later that night, I found out it was counterfeit and soon after that I
saw the driver in the neighborhood of my hotel. I cursed him out with the little spanish I knew. I got his lisence plate number and today went to the police. The police station took all morning long. I will stay here for a couple of days before heading south again. note to sister: I will have to set up that blog thing later when I have more time and am more comfortable. [from robin: yeah,yeah,yeah.. it's here, waiting for you.]

FIrst Entry, Ripped from Pete's Email

hey everybody, I arrived safe and sound in Lima, Peru last night. On
the flight here, I met an American business man, who gave me a safe ride
to my hotel. This was a very good thing because it was free, and I didn't
get ripped off by the taxi drivers. i am staying at the Hostel espana for
six dollars a night.

SO so so so much has gone on today that I don't know where to begin. First, I learned money. Next, I went to cathedral de San Francisco and saw the catacombs (undreground graves). It was interesting to actually see the bones and skulls of thousands of people. The tour of the church was quite informative. Around noon, I stumbled upon the changing of the guard in front of Plaza Mayor, where the president of Peru lives. It was a beautifully orchestrated event. I saw the museum of the Spanish inquisition where all sorts of torture took place. also seen today but of less importance, congress building of Peru and China town. Lima is a very European looking city without the European budget. I really only have it in my heart to see the museum of natural history and Ill be ready to move on from Lima bye for now,

this is pete's blog; i'm just window dressing

my brother went to peru, and all i had to give him was this lousy blog.

hopefully he will have charming travel stories to give us all....
